How It Started
As a mixed race girl, with a maternal descent of Puerto Rico and a paternal descent of Trinidad and Tobago, I have a very unique texture of hair. Growing up with my Hispanic mother, she did her best to care for my hair, but unfortunately was not familiar with my hair type. She learned to braid, in order to better style and tame my hair, and it worked but eventually became very tiresome. At age 10, my mother decided to take me to my first beauty salon, and the hair stylist immediately suggested I get a relaxer.
Hair Journey
Beginning age 10 til age 17, I did everything imaginable to my hair, from the ritual touch-up relaxers, to bleaching my hair and dying it. I've had almost every color, that was popular among the millennial generation, from
Red
to
Blonde
Constantly visiting the ever so popular Dominican hair salons of NYC, I just did what they told me, and kept up with all the hair trends and chemical treatments.
Realization
There comes a time in every woman's life when she has a hair emergency and needs saving fast! Mine came when I was going out with friends and I needed a wash and set. My typical salon was packed, with an average wait time of 30 minutes; and I just did not have that kind of time! I ultimately decided to visit a nearby Black Owned business, owned by a nice Jamaican woman, who's salon was nearly empty. I rushed in and asked for a wash and set, and as soon as she agreed, I sat down. That was when I was given the shock of my life! The hair stylist released my ponytail and parted my hair to observe her "canvas" and was surprised at what she saw. She asked me where I normally visited, as well as my typical hair regimen, and the products I used in my hair. As I answered her questions, it dawned on her why my hair was in the state, that it was. She said that my shoulder length hair, was so damaged, that the center on my head (known as the crown), was only about an inch long!
My eyes immediately welled up with tears, because I considered my hair, to be my crown and glory. That's when I knew, I had to make a change!
The New Beginning
My hair has been chemically treatment- free for the last 11 years, and I've honestly tried almost every curl product you can name.

I've tried ORS Olive Oil

ORS Curls Unleashed

ORS Curls Unleashed

and
Miss Jessie's
but nothing seemed to give me the FULL RESULTS that I was looking for. So I've decided to go 100% natural and only use homemade, natural hair care products on my natural and non- processed, curly hair.
